June 26 - July 24, 2010
taguchi fine art, ltd.

Kuno Gonschior was born in Wanne-Eickel, Germany in 1935. After his graduation from Art Academy Duesseldorf in 1961, he studied at Cologne University until 1963. From 1982 through 2000, he taught as a professor for painting at the Berlin University of the Arts. Died in Bochum in March, 2010.

Conceptual abstract color painter

He was one of the prominent students of German influential informel painter, Karl-Otto Goetz. Amongst his other students were Gotthard Graubner, Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, etc. Gonschior's first one person show was in 1962 and since then, he had kept showing his works in many one person shows and group shows including Documenta 6 in 1971. He played an important role in the history of German contemporary painting as a conceptual abstract color painter and his works are housed in many major collections. Lately he is recognized as one of the most important contemporary painters in Germany and the opportunity of exhibitions outside Europe, as the United States, Australia and Asia is increasing. His sudden death is regretted all the more because his fame is now getting more and more international.

First one person show in Japan

His death was in the middle of the preparation for his first show at taguchi fine art, originally planned for 2011 and it is unfortunate that no completed works were left for the show. Therefore this time we exhibit four recent paintings which he had sent to Tokyo beforehand. Together with them are some new small paintings which were hung on the wall of his living room in Bochum.

This installation shall be his first one person show in Japan and we would like to express our condolence with this show.
