Wakiro Sumi, who currently resides in the Chiba-prefecture, was born in the Gifu-prefecture in 1950. After having left the Faculty of Sculpture of Nagoya Art University, Sumi completed his course at the Fujimi-cho Atelier "B" Seminar in 1972. He has kept his concentration on sculpture, and has been introducing various sculptures to the world. He has always diversified his work, using both geometric and organic form, using various materials such as bronze to wax, and tackling the issues of "verticality" and "horizontality". By doing so, he has been producing his works following the rules of traditional sculpture honestly even amongst the sculptors of his era. Since the 1990's, he has been producing vigorously, presenting his works in various exhibitions such as the "Among the Figures" (1992 The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo/ The National Museum of Art, Osaka), "Art Today 2000" (Sezon Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa), "Tsubaki-kai" ( 2001- Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo), and "Retracing the Paths" (2002 Sakura City Museum of Art, Chiba). This March, he put up a monumental bronze sculpture "Endless Waltz" in the front garden of Shiseido Art House, Kakegawa in Shizuoka. On this occasion, exhibited are the drawings for his recent sculptural works, "dance", "Ordet" and "Endless Waltz". In these drawings, we may understand that Sumi's attitude to sculptures is consistent no matter what the theme or subject is. Also we would have a fresh feeling to see the sculptor's excellent and unique ability to grasp the spaces and to translate three dimensional objects appreciated with tactile sense into two dimensional forms. Looking the transformation of the forms from his previous works, from the"Veil" series and "Fusulina" series, to his recent works, may help us to imagine the form of his future works. checklist of the installation 1. for dance, 2003, pencil, pastel on paper, 38.0 x 28.3 cm 2. for dance, 2001, pencil, pastel on paper, 38.0 x 28.3 cm 3. for dance, 2003, pencil, pastel on paper, 38.0 x 28.3 cm 4. ordet, 2002, pencil, pastel on paper, 56.0 x 24.7 cm 5-12. for dance, 2001-2002, pencil on paper, 38.0 x 28.3 cm 13. for fusulina, 2003, pencil, oil on paper, 76.5 x 56.5 cm 14. for dance, 2003, pencil on paper, 76.5 x 56.5 cm 15. for dance, 2003, pastel on paper, 76.5 x 56.5 cm 16. for dance, 2003, pencil, acrylic on paper, 76.5 x 56.5 cm 17. for dance, 2003, pencil, acrylic on paper, 76.5 x 56.5 cm 18. for endless waltz, 2003, pencil, acrylic on paper, 78.0 x 57.0 cm |
