wakiro sumi, "carved work"

aug. 29 - sept. 26, 2009
taguchi fine art, ltd.

Wakiro Sumi, who currently resides in the Chiba prefecture, was born in the Gifu-prefecture in 1950. After having left the Faculty of Sculpture of Nagoya Art University, Sumi completed his course at the Fujimi-cho Atelier "B" Seminar in 1972. He has kept his concentration on sculpture, and has been introducing various sculptures to the world. He has always diversified his work, using both geometric and organic form, using various materials such as bronze, plaster to wax, and tackling the issues of "verticality" and "horizontality". By doing so, he has been producing his works following the rules of traditional sculpture honestly.
Sumi has been producing vigorously, presenting his works in various exhibitions such as "Art Today 2000" (Sezon Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa), "Tsubaki-kai" ( 2001-2005, Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo), "Retracing the Paths" (2002, Sakura City Museum of Art, Chiba), "From Expression to Expression II" - two person show with Shintaro Tanaka (2006, Yokohama Portside Gallery) and "Today's Artist XI" with Naoya Hatakeyama at the Museum of Modern Art in Kamakura (2007), etc.

This is his fourth one person show at Taguchi Fine Art. Recent sculptures carved from blocks of aluminum, bronze and brass are displayed. We can feel Sumi's consistent senses on sculpture from tense relation between void space and reserved minimum mass of metal, and also from the exquisite contrast between polished shiny surface and fused rough surface or patinated tender surface in every single piece.
