kisho mwkaiyama, "moonveda"

oct. 21 - dec. 3, 2011
taguchi fine art, ltd.

Kisho Mwkaiyama was born in 1968 in Osaka. Since his first one-person show in 1991, he has been having exhibitions in Japan and in Germany. He is now living and working in Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture. His beautiful works made of wax are housed in many famous company collections and prominent private collections, as Mori Museum of Art, Obayashi Corporation, Enoteca Co.ltd, Samsung Japan, etc. With works in new direction, which will be on view on this occasion, he is expected to be more active and having more exhibitions.

Wax

Mwkaiyama is known for his beautiful works made of thick semitransparent wax. Light is coming into the wax not only from the front but also from the four sides of the work and is reflected repeatedly inside the wax. Those contained light in the wax let the faint and subtle color appear on the surface of work.
Wax is a gentle, organic material with which we human beings are very familiar. German artist, Joseph Beuys and Wolfgang Laib, both of whom Mwkaiyama respects so much, also liked to use this material for their works. Mwkaiyama grew up in Mount Koya, a sacred place for esoteric Buddhism. There he spent long time being surrounded many candles, that are dedicated to God and Buddha as a medium of prayer. Therefore he regards wax as a very important material for his works.

Universal Light

For Mwkaiyama, his work is not the thick layer of wax, not the existing body itself, which he creates with his skilled technique and with very careful attention but is the universal light which dwells in the wax. He adopts simple shape as rectangle or circle and symmetric form to his works because it emphasizes the solemnity and sublimity, being away from the daily objects and concreteness.
To feel profound existence in unseen things, to believe that spirit is dwelling in everything, this idea has been inherited in the bottom of Japanese religious life since the ancient nature worship, which is not only in the field of esoteric Buddhism. For Mwkaiyama, his daily practice to create his wax works is the same practice to offer candle light to unseen God or Buddha, which people have been doing since ancient times.

New development

It has been 20 years since he began to work with wax. On this occasion we exhibit gMoonlith works which consist of thick wax, from the previous series but never shown in any exhibition. And also gVedah works which are from new series of works on paper. With this installation, we would present the transition and development of his works from "Practice of light and color" using bright colors into "Practice of depth and darkness" using gradation between white and black.
This is the first exhibition by Mwkaiyama at taguchi fine art and is after 11 years blank of his solo show in Tokyo. Please come to take a look of his current works.
